72 houses were destroyed and a further 32 were damaged. There were no deaths or serious injuries.
The fires were accidentally started by a policeman using an angle grinder and they soon got out of control due to a hot strong easterly (80 km/h) breeze. Many evacuees did not have time to rescue anything before they left.
