From Middle English mysterie < Latin mysterium < Ancient Greek μυστήριον (musterion, “a mystery, a secret, a secret rite”) < μύστης (mustēs, “initiated one”) < μυέω (mueō, “I initiate”) < μύω (muō, “I shut”).
